What You Should Know About Book Publishers

February 22nd, 2012

tried changing the theme to an autumn design and to a modern design ...Before you try to get your book published, you should definitely be aware of a few things about the book publishing industry in general, and the editors and publishers that work for them.

First, book publishing companies get a LOT of submissions each month. By a lot, I mean far more than they can take the time to read and still do the other tasks involved in their jobs.

Those publishers that still accept unagented submissions usually have someone -either a secretary or an intern – whip through the submissions first to get rid of anything that is obviously not of interest, so if you send the wrong genre to the wrong publisher, no one of influence is ever going to lay eyes on it.

Those few publishers who accept unsolicited submissions also have very, very clear guidelines on what to send and how, and so few people seem to read those guideines that if you actually do have a book that fits in their guidelines and submit it the way they request, you’re actually one of a minority.

The Solitary Lifestyle of Writers Often Leads to Alcoholism

December 8th, 2011

Writing can be a very solitary task, which is why most people who do it for a living experience varying degrees of panic and anxiety. Unfortunately, the stereotype of the alcoholic writer is grounded in reality. Many famous writers have been alcoholics, including Ernest Hemingway and Stephen King. (King even admits in his non-fiction book On Writing that he doesn’t even remember writing the novel Cujo.)

The important thing that a writer must do to battle the lonely hours of writing is to develop a positive social life. The best way to do so is to have a routine where you actually get out of the house and go where there are people for at least an hour a day.

While most people are surrounded by others at their jobs, writers must face their work alone. Don’t let it get to you. Try to meet one new person every day. And whatever you do, no matter how romantic it seems, don’t grab the bottle when you feel panic and anxiety coming on. Go out, get some fresh air, and talk to people instead.

Using a Free Grammar Checker for First Impressions

July 30th, 2011

First impressions are important and nearly every professional person knows this; but do you think of the first impression you are making through email a lot of the time? The sad truth is that many people do not realize what a devastatingly negative effect poor grammar can have on their reputation and the impressions they make on other people. Here we will talk about why grammar is so important as well as the things you can do to improve yours through the use of a grammar checker .

When someone reads an email as a potential customer, they want to trust that you are a great business person. They want to know that you are in control, that you have valuable products and that you are going to deliver trustworthy services. If they can spot spelling errors and grammatical mistakes in your first email or on your website, how are they going to trust you? They will know instantly that they might have a higher level of at least grammatical intelligence than you do and this can be a major turn-off.

For this reason you want to make sure that your emails are made correctly and written well. This can be done through a grammar checker online for little or no cost. This tool does not take much time to learn how to use and once you are familiar with it, the tool can save you hours of editing time and prevent you from being judged negatively by colleagues for your poor word choices. Once you get used to it, you can use this for anything that you have to write from essays to work papers to a simple email to say hello to someone.

This can be a great thing to do because you will get in the habit of checking your own grammar because of the device! You will notice that there are certain types of sentences that never work out right and you will also know that no matter what you write, this device can show you where you have made a mistake. Granted, the grammar checker online will never do a perfect job if you make lots of errors and there are some errors that it simply will never pick up on. However, it can still improve the quality of your work.

When you read the first email someone sends to you of a business proposition or in response to a request you sent them for services, pay attention to how much value you place on the grammatical correctness of their sentences. Chances are that if there is an error that you notice, you will not see the email as very impressive. That is why you want to use something like a free grammar checker when you interact with new clients and business partners.

Online Book Clubs

April 19th, 2011

I’m a busy mother of three. Between carting my children to school and after school activities, my job, house work, cooking, and cleaning, I hardly ever have time for myself. I’ve enjoyed reading since I was a young child myself. I don’t have time to visit library circles anymore, so I was thrilled to turn to online book clubs. While I still very much enjoy reading, I don’t have a lot of time to research new novels. I can simply hop online, click on which kind of genre I may be interested in at the time, and voila! I have some recommendations right in front of me. That coupled with online library reserves has made my life a whole lot easier. I don’t feel guilty running into the library quickly to snatch my reserve off the shelf. My kids have even gotten some good recommendations online from my book club. We’re active members and write reviews as often as possible.
